Palak dal is a great comfort food and is also highly nutritious. As you know, the leafy green Spinach is a rich source of iron.
This dish is called as keerai kootu in South India. Have it piping hot with rotis or rice and it tastes really good.

an easy healthy spinach and lentils curry recipe.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup moong dal ( pasi paruppu )
- 1 bunch chopped spinach leaves ( palak )
- 1 onion medium-sized
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 1 tomato medium-sized
- 2 dry red chillies
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- A few curry leaves
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 2 tsp coriander powder
- A pinch of asafoetida
- 1 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Pressure cook dal and chopped palak leaves together along with turmeric powder for around 2 whistles.
- Finely chop the onion, tomato and garlic.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add red chillies, asafoetida and cumin seeds.
- Then add the urad dal and once it turns brown, add the chopped onions, garlic, ginger and curry leaves.
- Fry till the onions turn soft.
- Then add the chopped tomato and fry till the raw smell goes.
- Add the cooked dal and palak to this along with salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and coriander powder.
- Add a little more water and cook till the gravy is of the consistency needed.
- Serve hot with rotis or rice.
