Pasi payaru masiyal recipe – a simple mashed green gram curry recipe. A very easy to prepare recipe, it has cooked whole green gram dal that is mashed and then flavored with mildly spiced seasoning.
While traditionally masiyal is served for lunch as an accompaniment for rice, this dish goes well with chapathis also.

A healthy mashed green gram curry recipe.
Ingredients
- 1 cup pasi payaru ( green gram / whole moong dal 0
- 4 garlic cloves, crushed
- 2-3 green chillies
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- A few curry leaves
- 1 dry red chilli
- 1 tsp oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Soak whole green gram overnight or for 6-7 hours.
- Pressure cook soaked green gram with turmeric powder and 2.5 cups of water for 4-5 whistles.
- Once pressure is released from the cooker, lightly mash the cooked green gram.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds.
- When mustard crackles, add dry red chilli, curry leaves, slit green chillies and mashed garlic cloves.
- Saute for a minute till garlic turns light brown.
- Then add the cooked green gram dal along with salt.
- Let this simmer on low heat till the gravy thickens and then remove from heat.
- Pasi payaru masiyal is ready to be served with rice or rotis. Add a tsp of ghee / clarified butter when serving and enjoy!
