Pudalangai Kootu – Snake Gourd Kootu

Pudalangai kootu recipe is snake gourd curry with lentils and coconut. It is a popular traditional dish that is commonly cooked in most South Indian homes. Snake gourd has great health benefits.

It is a nutritious vegetable rich in dietary fibre. As snake gourd has a high water content, it is one of the best vegetables to be eaten during hot summer.

Somehow dishes prepared with paruppu or lentils makes for great comfort food and this pudalangai kootu also falls in this category.

Its a mildly spiced dish. This dish is usually served with sambar / rasam.

It goes very well with spicy kara kuzhambu also. You could even have pudalangai kootu as a side dish for chapathis or rotis.

an easy curry of snake gourd with lentils and coconut.

Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups chopped snake gourd ( pudalangai )
  • 1/4 cup chana dal ( kadalai paruppu / split bengal gram dal )
  • 2 tbsp yellow gram dal ( moong dal / pasi paruppu )
  • 1 green chilli
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds ( jeera )
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp broken urad dal ( ulutham paruppu )
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • A few curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel the skin of the snake gourd and chop into pieces.
  2. Cook the snake gourd along with moong dal in enough water till they turn soft.
  3. Grind grated coconut, green chilli and cumin seeds into a fine paste by adding water.
  4. Pressure cook chana dal with turmeric powder till it turns soft.
  5. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and when they splutter, add urad dal.
  6. When the dal turns brown, add curry leaves.
  7. Add the cooked chana dal, cooked snake gourd-moong dal mixture and the coconut paste along with salt.
  8. Bring this to a boil and switch off the stove.
  9. Serve pudalangai kootu hot with rice or rotis.
