Idli Milagai Podi recipe is a South Indian spicy lentil powder that is a simple and spicy accompaniment for idli or dosa.
It is usually served with generous amount of sesame oil / gingelly oil or with ghee. When you have no time for preparing chutney or sambar, then this podi comes to the rescue.
The powder can be prepared and stored in clean and dry air-tight containers and stays good for a couple of months.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup urad dal / ulutham paruppu
- 1/4 cup chana dal / kadalai paruppu
- 10 dry red chillies
- 2 tsp sesame seeds
- A generous pinch of asafoetida
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat a tsp of oil in a pan. Fry urad dal, chana dal, dry red chillies and asafoetida till the dals turn golden brown.
- Remove from pan and keep aside to cool.
- Add sesame seeds in the same pan and saute till the sesame crackles.
- Remove and keep this aside to cool completely.
- Dry grind all the fried ingredients to a coarse powder.
- Add salt and mix well.
- Store idli milagai podi in an air-tight container.
