Simple Rava Idli

by Jiya Jesh · Updated on July 15, 2022 Breakfast| South Indian Recipes

Simple rava idli recipe– an easy steamed South Indian style breakfast recipe using semolina.

The traditional idli is prepared using rice and lentils, that needs to be soaked, ground and then the batter needs to be fermented before you can make them.

Rava idlis are a quick alternative to the traditional ones and can be a simple breakfast option for busy weekdays or lazy weekends.

We do have the ready-made instant packs available for preparing these idlis, especially the popular MTR rava idli instant mix.

But this is a simple recipe that can be prepared from scratch at home and if you have run out of this instant mix, then do try this version.

These soft idlis can be served with coconut chutney, idli milagai podi or sambar. Lets see how to make this simple rava idli recipe.

A simple idli recipe using semolina.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rava / suji / semolina
  • 1/2 cup yogurt / curd / dahi
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 green chilli
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp broken urad dal / split black lentils
  • 3-4 curry leaves
  • Around 1 cup water
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Finely chop green chilli and curry leaves.
  2. Dry roast rava in a pan till you get a good aroma.
  3. In a bowl, mix roasted rava, salt, ginger and green chillies.
  4. Add the yogurt and water and mix well.
  5. Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds.
  6. When the seeds splutter, add urad dal and chopped curry leaves.
  7. Saute till dal turns brown. Remove and add this seasoning to the prepared batter.
  8. Keep the batter aside for about 20 minutes. The semolina would have absorbed the water.
  9. If the batter is thick, add little more water to make a batter of dropping consistency.
  10. Just before steaming, add the baking soda to the batter and mix well.
  11. Fill the greased idli moulds with batter and steam for around 10-12 minutes.
  12. Instant Rava idlis are ready to be served hot.
