Moru Kachiyathu | Seasoned Buttermilk Curry

Moru Kachiyathu is seasoned buttermilk curry that is served as an accompaniment to rice. This simple Kerala style buttermilk curry is very easy to make. If you are looking for a great comfort food that can be prepared quickly for lunch for one of those lazy days then do try this easy moru kachiyathu recipe.

Moru Kachiyathu | Seasoned Buttermilk Curry Recipe

a Kerala style simple seasoned buttermilk curry recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups yogurt / curd
  • 3-4 shallots
  • 1 inch piece ginger
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • A pinch of fenugreek seeds / methi seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • A few curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Blend the curd with enough water and keep aside.
  2. Slice the shallots. Chop garlic and ginger finely. Slit green chillies.
  3. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and asafoetida.
  4. When the mustard seeds splutters, add dry red chillies and fenugreek seeds and fry till the seeds turn light brown.
  5. Now add sliced shallots, curry leaves, green chillies, chopped ginger and garlic.
  6. Saute for 1-2 minutes.
  7. Then add turmeric powder and salt and mix well.
  8. Add the buttermilk and keep stirring till you start seeing steam coming through. Don’t let the curry boil.
  9. Remove from stove and moru kachiyathu is ready to be served with hot rice.

Notes

  • Make sure that the buttermilk is at room temperature otherwise there is a possibility that it may curdle.
  • You can refrigerate this curry for 2 – 3 days.
