Broad Beans Fry with Tomatoes | Avarakkai Poriyal

Avarakkai poriyal is a simple broad beans fry with tomatoes. This is a South Indian style broad beans poriyal or side dish.

In this recipe I have used tomatoes and there is no coconut added. I usually make it for lunch as an accompaniment to rice and sambar or rasam.

This avarakkai poriyal goes well as a side dish for rice and can even be had with rotis / chapatis.

Broad Beans Fry with Tomatoes – Avarakkai Poriyal recipe

a simple broad beans curry using tomatoes.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups chopped avarakkai / broad beans
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tomato
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp broken urad dal / ulutham paruppu
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • A few curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. String the broad beans and chop them into small pieces.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in pan. Add mustard seeds and when they splutter, add urad dal and asafoetida
  3. When the urad dal turns brown, add chopped onion and curry leaves.
  4. Saute till the onions turn translucent.
  5. Now add the chopped tomatoes along with salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and coriander powder.
  6. Fry till tomatoes are mashed. Then add chopped broad beans and fry for a minute.
  7. Add enough water. Cover and let broad beans get cooked till it becomes soft.
  8. Once all the water gets dried, remove from stove.
  9. Serve avarakkai poriyal as a side dish for rice or chappatis.
