Pachai Payaru Sweet Sundal | Green Gram Sweet Sundal

Pachai payaru sweet sundal is a traditional South Indian whole green gram sweet sundal recipe. For each the nine days of Navratri festival, a different legume or lentil is used to prepare sundal as naivedyam, as an offering to God.

This sweet version of sundal is made using whole moong dal / paasi payaru legume and sweetened with jaggery.

Pachai Payaru Sweet Sundal recipe

a traditional South Indian whole green gram sweet sundal recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup whole green gram ( whole moong dal / pachai payaru )
  • 1/2 cup powdered jaggery
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • A generous pinch of cardamom powder
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Soak green gram overnight or for around 6 hours.
  2. Pressure cook the soaked green gram in little water for around 2 whistles, till they are soft, but not overcooked.
  3. Drain water and keep aside.
  4. Meanwhile, boil jaggery with little water till it melts.
  5. Strain to remove any impurities.
  6. Heat the strained jaggery in a pan along with salt and let it come to a boil.
  7. Now add the cooked green gram along with cardamom powder and mix well.
  8. Let this cook till the jaggery water dries up and is well blended with green gram.
  9. Finally add grated coconut and mix well.
  10. Remove from heat and green gram sweet sundal is now ready to be served.
