Oats Pongal recipe is a healthy breakfast made in a South Indian style. The traditional breakfast in South Indian homes is ven pongal.
While this is made using rice and lentils as the main ingredients, oats pongal is a twist to this tradtional recipe.
This healthy oats pongal recipe is made with oats and it tastes good just like ven pongal.

a healthy breakfast recipe using oats and lentils
Ingredients
- 1 cup oats
- 1/2 cup yellow moong dal (pasi paruppu)
- 1 inch piece ginger
- 1 tsp whole black pepper
- A few cashewnuts
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- A few curry leaves
- A pinch of asafoetida
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp ghee
Instructions
- Dry roast the oats for a few minutes.
- Chop ginger finely.
- In a pressure cooker, add moong dal and the roasted oats along with around 5 cups of water and salt.
- Cook this for about 3 to 4 whistles.
- In a pan heat ghee. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida.
- When the cumin turns brown, add black pepper, ginger and curry leaves.
- Then add the cashews and fry till they turn golden brown.
- Add this seasoning to the oats-dal mixture.
- Serve oats pongal hot with sambar or chutney.
