Instead of the usual oats porridge, I decided to make a South Indian style upma with oats instead of rava (semolina). This can be had for breakfast and tastes good. Oats are very healthy and nutritious cereal. They are known to contain soluble fibres. This recipe is very easy and quick to make.

healthy South Indian style breakfast using quick oats.
Ingredients
- 1 cup oats
- 1 tomato
- 2 red chillies
- 1 onion
- 1 tsp urad dal
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- A few coriander leaves
- Salt to taste
- 1 tbsp oil
Instructions
- Dry roast the oats till the oats slightly change color and you get a good aroma. Keep this aside.
- Chop the onions and tomatoes.
- In a pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds, red chillies and asafoetida. When the mustard seeds crackle, add the urad dal.
- When they become brown, add the chopped onions. Fry till the onions turn translucent.
- Then add the tomatoes and salt and fry for a few minutes.
- Now add 2 cups of water and let this boil. When the water gets boiled, add the oats.
- Stir for a few minutes and let the oats get cooked. Add the chopped coriander leaves.
- Once the upma becomes dry, remove and serve hot.
- You could have it as it is or have it with any chutney.
