A healthy South Indian breakfast recipe using semolina and vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rava / semolina / sooji
  • 1 onion, medium-sized
  • 4 french beans
  • 1 tomato, medium-sized
  • 1 carrot, small
  • 1/4 cup green peas
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1/2 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • A few curry leaves
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 3 cups water
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Chop onions, green chillies and tomatoes finely.
  2. Chop the carrots and beans finely.
  3. Dry roast rava in a pan till you get a nice aroma from it and it turns light brown.
  4. Transfer it to a bowl and keep aside.
  5. Heat 3 tsp oil in the same pan. Add mustard seed and asafoetida.
  6. When mustard seeds splutter, add chopped onions, ginger, green chillies and grated ginger.
  7. Saute till the onions turn translucent.
  8. Now add the chopped tomatoes, carrots, beans and green peas along with salt and turmeric powder.
  9. Cook over a low flame till the vegetables are almost cooked.
  10. Add water and once it comes to a boil, add the roasted rava slowly, stirring at the same time so that no lumps are formed.
  11. Once rava is cooked and all the water is absorbed, remove from heat.
  12. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve rava kichadi hot with chutney or sambar.

Notes

  • You can substitute oil with ghee ( clarified butter ) for a richer and more aromatic kichadi.
  • Chop the carrots and beans to small pieces so that they get cooked faster.
