Onion Tomato Coconut Chutney

Here is a simple and easy South Indian style onion tomato coconut chutney recipe. Idlis and dosas are traditional South Indian breakfast dishes.

Apart from sambar and the white coconut chutney that can be served as an accompaniment, there are many other chutneys that go well as a side dish for idli and dosa.

This chutney is very easy to make and tastes delicious.

Onion Tomato Coconut Chutney recipe

A South Indian chutney recipe using onions, tomatoes and coconut, a tasty side dish for idlis and dosas.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion, large
  • 2 tomatoes, medium-sized
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • 1/2 inch piece ginger
  • 1 tbsp urad dal
  • 3 dry red chillies
  • 2 tsp oil
  • Salt to taste

For Tempering

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • A few curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp oil

Instructions

  1. Roughly chop onions, ginger and tomatoes.
  2. Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan. Add dry red chillies and urad dal.
  3. Saute till dal turns golden brown.
  4. Then add chopped onions and ginger.
  5. Fry till onions turn light brown.
  6. Now add chopped tomatoes along with salt.
  7. Fry till the raw smell of tomatoes goes and it becomes mashed.
  8. Remove from heat and keep aside. Let this onion-tomato mixture cool down.
  9. Then grind it along with grated coconut, by adding little water.
  10. For tempering, heat 1/2 tsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds.
  11. Once mustard seeds splutter, add curry leaves and saute for a few seconds.
  12. Add the seasoning to the prepared chutney and mix well.
  13. Coconut chutney with onions and tomatoes is ready to be served as a side dish for dosa, idli or ven pongal.
