Here is a simple and easy South Indian style onion tomato coconut chutney recipe. Idlis and dosas are traditional South Indian breakfast dishes.

A South Indian chutney recipe using onions, tomatoes and coconut, a tasty side dish for idlis and dosas.
Ingredients
- 1 onion, large
- 2 tomatoes, medium-sized
- 1/4 cup grated coconut
- 1/2 inch piece ginger
- 1 tbsp urad dal
- 3 dry red chillies
- 2 tsp oil
- Salt to taste
For Tempering
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- A few curry leaves
- 1/2 tsp oil
Instructions
- Roughly chop onions, ginger and tomatoes.
- Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan. Add dry red chillies and urad dal.
- Saute till dal turns golden brown.
- Then add chopped onions and ginger.
- Fry till onions turn light brown.
- Now add chopped tomatoes along with salt.
- Fry till the raw smell of tomatoes goes and it becomes mashed.
- Remove from heat and keep aside. Let this onion-tomato mixture cool down.
- Then grind it along with grated coconut, by adding little water.
- For tempering, heat 1/2 tsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds.
- Once mustard seeds splutter, add curry leaves and saute for a few seconds.
- Add the seasoning to the prepared chutney and mix well.
- Coconut chutney with onions and tomatoes is ready to be served as a side dish for dosa, idli or ven pongal.
