Spinach Masiyal is a typical South Indian recipe. It can be made with other varieties of greens or keerai as it is called in Tamil. This recipe consists of mashed greens with a tadka added at the end. It does not include any strong masalas.
This is a healthy, simple and a quick dish to make. It tastes good with rice and curd, along with papad or appalam.
Spinach is rich in antioxidant nutrients. Make sure that you wash the leaves well as the leaves and stem have a tendency to collect soil.

Ingredients
- 1 bunch spinach leaves ( palak keerai )
- 1 small onion
- 2 dry red chillis
- 1 tomato
- 1 tsp broken urad dal
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida ( hing )
- 2 tsp oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash the spinach and then roughly chop it. Boil it in a small quantity of water.
- Slice the onion and chop the tomato.
- Once the spinach has boiled, let it cool. Then blend/grind it into a paste along with salt and keep it aside.
- In a pan, heat oil. Add the mustard seeds and red chillies.
- When mustard seeds crackle, add urad dal and asafoetida.
- Once the dal becomes brown, add the sliced onions. Fry till the onions are translucent.
- Then add the tomatoes. Fry the tomatoes till the raw smell goes away.
- Add this to the ground spinach paste.
- Spinach masiyal is now ready to be served hot with rice.
