an easy rice recipe using green peas and Indian spices.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups rice
  • 1/2 cup shelled green peas or matar ( fresh / frozen )
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
  • 2 green chillies slit lengthwise
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped tomatoes
  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2 tsp coriander seeds
  • 3 cloves ( laung )
  • 1 inch piece cinnamon ( dalchini )
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds ( saunf or sombu )
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds ( jeera )
  • 1 1/2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse and soak the rice for 20-25 minutes. Cook the rice using a pressure cooker or rice cooker with 2 1/2 cups water. Then spread the cooked rice on a plate and let it cool down. Skip this step if you are using pre-cooked rice.
  2. Meanwhile, prepare the masala for the rice. Dry roast the cloves, cinnamon and coriander seeds together in a pan on low heat till the coriander seeds change color to light brown. Remove and set this aside in a bowl. In the same pan add fennel seeds and dry roast it till it changes color slightly. Grind all the roasted ingredients together to a fine powder consistency and set aside.
  3. Heat oil in the same pan. Add cumin seeds and when they crackle, add chopped onions, crushed garlic and slit green chillies.
  4. Saute till onions turn light brown in color.
  5. Now add the chopped tomatoes and let it cook for a couple of minutes till it gets mashed.
  6. Then add salt, turmeric powder and mix well.
  7. Add the green peas along with 1/4 cup water and cook till peas turn soft
  8. Once the water has almost dried up, add the ground masala powder and stir. After a minute, remove from flame.
  9. Gently mix this prepared masala with the cooked rice.
  10. Green peas masala rice is ready to be served with raita.

Notes

  • Make sure that you cool down the rice completely before mixing with the prepared masala.
