Aratikaya Vepudu | Plantain Fry

Aratikaya vepudu is a South Indian style crispy raw banana fry recipe. This is a simple and tasty raw banana fry that can be prepared quickly. It is best served as a side dish for rice.

As for the health benefits of raw bananas, they are a good source of potassium, vitamin A and vitamin C. They are also rich in dietary fiber.

Aratikaya Vepudu | Raw Banana Fry | Plantain Fry Recipe

Aratikaya Vepudu – Plantain Fry recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 aratikaya ( raw bananas / plantains / vazhakkai )
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds ( jeera )
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • A few curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel the skin of plantains. Slice them lengthwise into 4 pieces. Then chop them into thin slices. Keep the slices immersed in water till use.
  2. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds splutter, add cumin seeds.
  3. When cumin seeds start to crackle, add asafoetida and curry leaves.
  4. Saute for a couple of seconds and then add sliced garlic.
  5. Meanwhile drain the plantain slices and keep aside.
  6. Once garlic turns brown, add in the plantain slices and saute for 2 minutes.
  7. Add salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder and mix well.
  8. Let this cook on low heat, stirring at regular intervals.
  9. Once the plantain slices get cooked and are roasted well, remove from heat.
  10. Aratikaya vepudu is now ready to be served!
