Kondakadalai sundal is usually made during the Navratri festival in South Indian homes.
During the 9 day Navratri festival, a different variety of sundal is prepared for each of the 9 days. This sundal is prepared using white chana / chickpeas. Once you have soaked chickpeas, then this is a very easy dish to prepare.
It is a protein-rich salad.
You can also have this chickpeas sundal as a healthy snack.

a South Indian style chickpeas salad flavored with coconut.
Ingredients
- 1 cup chickpeas ( konda kadalai / kabuli chana / garbanzo bean )
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 2 dry red chillies
- 1 tsp urad dal
- A pinch of asafoetida
- A few curry leaves
- 2 tbsp grated coconut
- 1 tsp oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Soak chickpeas overnight or around 6 – 7 hours. Pressure cook them in enough water till they turn soft. Drain the water and keep the boiled chickpeas aside.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and when they splutter, add dry red chillies, asafoetida and urad dal.
- When urad dal turns brown, add curry leaves.
- Then add the boiled chickpeas along with salt and fry for a few minutes.
- Now add the grated coconut and mix well.
- Remove from heat and chickpeas sundal is ready to be served.
