Chickpeas Sundal | Kondakadalai Sundal

Kondakadalai sundal is usually made during the Navratri festival in South Indian homes.

During the 9 day Navratri festival, a different variety of sundal is prepared for each of the 9 days. This sundal is prepared using white chana / chickpeas. Once you have soaked chickpeas, then this is a very easy dish to prepare.

It is a protein-rich salad.

You can also have this chickpeas sundal as a healthy snack.

Chickpeas Sundal | Kondakadalai Sundal Recipe

a South Indian style chickpeas salad flavored with coconut.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chickpeas ( konda kadalai / kabuli chana / garbanzo bean )
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • A few curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1 tsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak chickpeas overnight or around 6 – 7 hours. Pressure cook them in enough water till they turn soft. Drain the water and keep the boiled chickpeas aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and when they splutter, add dry red chillies, asafoetida and urad dal.
  3. When urad dal turns brown, add curry leaves.
  4. Then add the boiled chickpeas along with salt and fry for a few minutes.
  5. Now add the grated coconut and mix well.
  6. Remove from heat and chickpeas sundal is ready to be served.
