Poha Upma | Aval Upma

Poha upma is a quick breakfast recipe prepared with beaten rice / flattened rice. Poha is dehusked rice and is nutritious. It is easy to digest.

This upma is a simple dish that can be prepared in a jiffy. It can also be served as an evening snack.

Poha Upma – Aval Upma recipe

A quick Indian breakfast recipe using flattened rice.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups thick poha / aval / beaten rice
  • 1 onion
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp broken urad dal
  • A few curry leaves
  • A few peanuts
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash poha and soak it in water for about 10 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and urad dal.
  3. When mustard crackles, add peanuts and fry for a few minutes.
  4. Add chopped onions and curry leaves.
  5. When onions turn soft, add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt and poha.
  6. Fry for a few minutes only till everything gets mixed well.
  7. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve poha upma hot.

Notes

  • As a variation, you could used green chillies instead of red chilli powder.
  • If using thin variety of poha, dont soak it for long, you could just wash it and use it in the recipe.
