Cabbage Kootu | Muttaikose Kootu

Cabbage kootu or muttaikkose kootu recipe is a South Indian cabbage and moong dal curry. Kootu, which is a thick curry of lentils and vegetables, is one of the quickest wholesome dishes to make as an accompaniment for rice or rotis.

Cabbage Kootu – Muttaikose Kootu Recipe

easy and quick cabbage and lentils curry with coconut.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup moong dal ( pasi paruppu / split yellow gram )
  • 2 cups chopped cabbage
  • 1/4 cup fresh grated coconut
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp broken urad dal ( ulutham paruppu / split black gram )
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1.5 tsp black peppercorns
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • A few curry leaves
  • 1 tsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook moong dal and cabbage together with 1.5 cups water, for upto 2 whistles.
  2. Grind grated coconut along with cumin seeds and black peppercorns to a fine paste using little water.
  3. Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds.
  4. When mustard seeds splutter, add urad dal, asafoetida and curry leaves.
  5. Once dal turns brown, add cooked dal and cabbage mixture.
  6. Add the ground coconut paste, salt and turmeric powder. Mix well.
  7. Let this cook on low flame for 6-7 minutes or until the desired consistency is reached.
  8. Remove from flame and cabbage kootu is ready to be served hot with rice or rotis!
