Palak Chole | Chickpeas Spinach Gravy

Palak chole is a North Indian style curry of chickpeas in a spinach gravy. This dish goes well with chapatis / rotis or even rice.

It is a protein and iron rich nutritious dish that is flavorful and tastes great. A cup of yogurt or curd and papad is a great accompaniment for this dish.

a delicious North Indian style chickpeas and spinach gravy.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch palak ( spinach )
  • 1 cup kabuli chana ( chole / garbanzo beans )
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 1 inch piece ginger
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak chickpeas in water overnight or for around 7 – 8 hours. Drain the water. Pressure cook the soaked chickpeas with enough water till they turn soft.
  2. Wash spinach leaves and chop them. Boil the chopped spinach in water for 2 – 3 minutes and blend it once it cools down.
  3. Chop onion, ginger and garlic. Blend the tomatoes to make a puree and keep aside.
  4. In a pan, heat oil. Add the chopped onions, ginger and garlic.
  5. Saute till the onions turn translucent.
  6. Then add the tomato puree along with salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder.
  7. Once the raw smell of the tomatoes goes, add the spinach puree and fry for a few minutes.
  8. Now add the cooked chickpeas along with water and simmer till the required consistency is achieved.
  9. Serve palak chole hot with rotis / chapathis / rice.
