Spicy Chana Dal Curry | Split Bengal Gram Curry

Spicy chana dal curry recipe is a yellow gram lentil curry flavored with spices. Dal and roti is a staple diet in North India. This chana dal is spicy and flavorful.

Split bengal gram dal is nutritious being a great source of protein. Dals are especially essential for vegetarians as it provides a good supplement for proteins.

This chana dal is easy to make and goes well with rotis as well as rice. Do try this easy spicy chana dal curry.

A spicy split bengal gram dal curry.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chana dal / split bengal gram
  • 1 onion
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1 inch piece ginger
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 inch piece cinnamon
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • A few coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash the chana dal.
  2. Heat oil in a presure cooker. Add cinnamon.
  3. Add chopped ginger, slit green chillies and half of the chopped onions.
  4. When the onions turn translucent, add chana dal along with enough water.
  5. Pressure cook till the dal turns soft.
  6. Once the pressure gets released, add a cup of water to the chana dal.
  7. Add salt and let this cook till it thickens a bit and reaches required consistency.
  8. Meanwhile for the tadka, in another pan, heat 1 tbsp oil.
  9. Add dry red chillies and when they change color, add remaining half of the chopped onions and saute.
  10. When onions turn golden brown, add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and cumin powder.
  11. Fry for a minute and add this to the dal.
  12. Mix well and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  13. Serve spicy chana dal hot with rotis or rice.
