A spicy split bengal gram dal curry.
Ingredients
- 1 cup chana dal / split bengal gram
- 1 onion
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 1 inch piece ginger
- 2 green chillies
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 inch piece cinnamon
- 2 dry red chillies
- A few coriander leaves
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash the chana dal.
- Heat oil in a presure cooker. Add cinnamon.
- Add chopped ginger, slit green chillies and half of the chopped onions.
- When the onions turn translucent, add chana dal along with enough water.
- Pressure cook till the dal turns soft.
- Once the pressure gets released, add a cup of water to the chana dal.
- Add salt and let this cook till it thickens a bit and reaches required consistency.
- Meanwhile for the tadka, in another pan, heat 1 tbsp oil.
- Add dry red chillies and when they change color, add remaining half of the chopped onions and saute.
- When onions turn golden brown, add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and cumin powder.
- Fry for a minute and add this to the dal.
- Mix well and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve spicy chana dal hot with rotis or rice.
