a simple and delicious North Indian style curry using mung beans
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole green gram ( sabut moong dal / pachai payaru )
- 1 onion
- 2 tomatoes
- 1 inch piece ginger
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 2 green chillies
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Pressure cook moong dal for 4-5 whistles or till the dal turns soft.
- Meanwhile chop onion, tomatoes, ginger and garlic. Slit green chillies.
- In a pan, heat oil. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida.
- Once they change color, add chopped onions, ginger, garlic and green chillies.
- Saute till the onions turn transparent.
- Now add the chopped tomatoes along with salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder.
- Fry till the tomatoes get mashed.
- Then add the cooked mung dal.
- Add water and let this cook to the consistency required and remove from heat.
- Serve whole moong dal curry hot with rice or flat breads.
