Baby Bitter Gourd Fry or Midhi pavakkai poriyal recipe is a dry curry prepared with baby bitter gourd. I dont try to remove the bitter taste of bitter gourd because they lend a different taste which you can’t get from other vegetables.
Bitter gourds have a bitter taste but have a lot of nutritional benefits. They are great source of dietary fiber.
They are low in calories and can be used for weight loss. Also, bitter gourd is very good for diabetes.
Another bitter gourd recipe that I love to make is bitter gourd chips.
Somehow I feel that baby bitter gourds are tastier compared to the regular sized bitter gourds. So when I saw these small bitter gourds, I readily took them and made my favorite bitter gourd fry recipe.

Baby Bitter Gourd Fry – Midhi Pavakkai Poriyal recipe
Ingredients
- 250 gms baby bitter gourds ( midhi pavakkai / karela )
- 1 onion small
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp red chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp garam masala powder
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp broken urad dal
- A pinch of asafoetida
- A few curry leaves
- 1 1/2 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash and trim the ends of the bitter gourds. Chop into thin slices, lengthwise. Also finely chop the onion.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds splutter, add broken urad dal, asafoetida and curry leaves.
- Once dal turns golden brown, add chopped onions and ginger paste.
- Saute till onions turn light brown.
- Now add the sliced bitter gourds along with salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder.
- Cook over low flame, stirring at regular intervals.
- Once bitter gourds become soft, sprinkle garam masala powder and mix well.
- Remove from heat. Baby bitter gourd fry is ready to be served.
