Cherupayar vazhakka thoran is a simple whole green gram stir fry with raw banana and coconut.
Bananas are widely used in South Indian cuisine. This recipe is a Kerala style dry curry / poriyal using raw bananas.

Cherupayar Vazhakka Thoran – Green Gram Raw Banana Stir Fry
Ingredients
- 2 vazhakka ( raw bananas / plantains )
- 1/2 cup whole green gram ( cherupayar or green moong dal )
- 2 green chillies
- 3 garlic cloves, crushed
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1 tsp cumin seeds ( jeera )
- 1 inch piece ginger
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 2 dry red chillies
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- A few curry leaves
- 2 tsp oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash green gram dal 4-5 times. Pressure cook the dal with 2 cups water for 4-5 whistles till it turns soft, but not mashed. Drain the water and keep aside.
- Coarsely grind grated coconut, ginger, cumin seeds and green chillies together, without adding any water.
- Peel the skin of raw banana and chop into small pieces.
- Boil the chopped banana in enough water along with salt and turmeric powder.
- Once banana becomes slightly soft, drain the water and keep the cooked banana aside.
- Heat oil in a pan or kadai. Add mustard seeds.
- When mustard seeds splutter, add crushed garlic cloves, dry red chillies and curry leaves. Saute for a minute.
- Then add the cooked banana and fry for 2 minutes.
- Finally add cooked green gram along with ground coconut mixture and salt.
- Mix well and let this cook for 2 minutes, stirring at regular intervals.
- Remove from heat and cherupayar vazhakka thoran is ready to be served!
