Cherupayar vazhakka thoran – a Kerala style dry curry of raw bananas with green mung dal.

Ingredients

  • 2 vazhakka ( raw bananas / plantains )
  • 1/2 cup whole green gram ( cherupayar or green moong dal )
  • 2 green chillies
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds ( jeera )
  • 1 inch piece ginger
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • A few curry leaves
  • 2 tsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash green gram dal 4-5 times. Pressure cook the dal with 2 cups water for 4-5 whistles till it turns soft, but not mashed. Drain the water and keep aside.
  2. Coarsely grind grated coconut, ginger, cumin seeds and green chillies together, without adding any water.
  3. Peel the skin of raw banana and chop into small pieces.
  4. Boil the chopped banana in enough water along with salt and turmeric powder.
  5. Once banana becomes slightly soft, drain the water and keep the cooked banana aside.
  6. Heat oil in a pan or kadai. Add mustard seeds.
  7. When mustard seeds splutter, add crushed garlic cloves, dry red chillies and curry leaves. Saute for a minute.
  8. Then add the cooked banana and fry for 2 minutes.
  9. Finally add cooked green gram along with ground coconut mixture and salt.
  10. Mix well and let this cook for 2 minutes, stirring at regular intervals.
  11. Remove from heat and cherupayar vazhakka thoran is ready to be served!
