Keerai Poriyal / Greens Stir Fry

This is a simple and easy to make sabzi recipe that can be had as a side dish for rice. Keerai poriyal is a South Indian greens recipe that has coconut added to it. You could use any type of keerai for this recipe. I have used arai keerai here.

Keerai poriyal – a healthy greens stir fry recipe flavored with coconut.
Recipe type: Side Dish
Cuisine:South Indian
Serves:2-3

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch keerai
  • 1 small onion
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp chana dal
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper powder
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • A few curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash the greens well and chop them.
  2. In a pan heat about 2 tsp oil. Add mustard seeds, dry red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida.
  3. When mustard crackles, add urad dal and chana dal.
  4. Add chopped garlic and chopped onions and saute till they turn translucent.
  5. Now add the chopped greens along with salt and black pepper powder, adding a little water.
  6. Fry until the greens are cooked and become dry.
  7. Finally add the grated coconut and mix well for a few minutes.
  8. Remove from heat and keerai poriyal is ready to be served as a side dish for rice or rotis.
