Snake Gourd Pepper Fry | Podalangai Milagu Poriyal

Podalangai milagu poriyal is a simple South Indian style snake gourd stir fry recipe. It goes well as a side dish for rice.

Snake gourd is a very nutritious vegetable and is low in calories. Do try this easy and quick snake gourd pepper fry recipe.

Snake Gourd Pepper Fry recipe

A simple snake gourd and pepper stir fry recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups chopped snake gourd
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tsp black peppercorns
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 dry red chilli
  • 1/2 tsp broken urad dal
  • A few curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel the snake gourds and discard the seeds. Chop the snake gourds into small pieces.
  2. Dry roast cumin seeds and peppercorns till the cumin seeds change color.
  3. Pound them to a coarse powder and keep aside.
  4. In a pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds and when they splutter, add dry red chilli and broken urad dal.
  5. Fry till urad dal becomes brown.
  6. Now add the chopped onion and curry leaves.
  7. Saute the onions till they turn soft.
  8. Then add chopped podalangai along with salt and little water.
  9. Cover and let the podalangai get cooked, stirring in-between at intervals.
  10. Once the poriyal becomes dry, finally add the cumin pepper powder and fry for a minute and remove from heat.
  11. Snake gourd pepper fry is ready to be served.
