A simple and tasty South Indian raw banana fry flavored with coconut and pepper.
Ingredients
- 1 vazhakkai ( raw banana / green plantain )
- 6 shallots / sambar onions
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 2 tbsp grated coconut
- 1/2 tsp pepper powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
- A few curry leaves
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp broken urad dal
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Peel the skin of the raw banana and chop them into cubes.
- Boil the chopped raw banana in water along with turmeric powder and salt.
- Once the banana is half-done, drain the water and keep aside.
- Finely chop the shallots and garlic.
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and urad dal.
- When the mustard splutters, add curry leaves, onions and garlic.
- Fry till onions turn soft.
- Now add the cooked banana along with red chilli powder.
- Fry till the banana becomes a little roasted.
- Finally, add the grated coconut and pepper powder and fry for just a few minutes.
- Vazhakkai milagu varuval is ready to be served hot as an accompaniment for rice.
