Tomato Perugu Pachadi | Tomato Yogurt Chutney

Pickles and pachadis are an integral part of Andhra cuisine. This tomato perugu pachadi is an Andhra style pachadi. It is basically seasoned yogurt with tomatoes.

It is a simple and quick recipe that can be made in minutes. If you have no other vegetables on hand, this tomato yogurt chutney is perfect to serve with rice or rotis.

An Andhra style seasoned yogurt with tomatoes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yogurt ( curd / dahi )
  • 1 onion, medium-sized
  • 2 ripe red tomatoes, medium-sized
  • 1 green chilli, slit lengthwise
  • 1 inch piece ginger
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp broken urad dal
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 2 tsp oil
  • A sprig of curry leaves
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Chop onion, ginger and tomatoes finely.
  2. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds splutter, add dry red chillies, asafoetida and urad dal.
  3. Once the dal turns golden brown, add chopped onions, ginger, green chilli and curry leaves.
  4. Saute till onions turn translucent.
  5. Then add the chopped tomatoes along with salt and turmeric powder. Fry till the tomatoes turn soft.
  6. Remove from heat and keep it aside to cool.
  7. Meanwhile beat the yogurt till it is smooth.
  8. Add the prepared tomato mixture to the yogurt and mix well.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve with rice or rotis.

Notes

  • You can omit onion if needed.
