Beetroot Tikki Recipe | Beetroot Patties

Beetroot tikki recipe – easy and delicious Indian style beetroot patties. This simple snack recipe has the goodness of beetroot and oats flavored with spices.

I usually make beetroot dal and wanted to try a snack with this vegetable and the result is this beetroot tikki which I have made a few times.

It needs only a few ingredients but it is so tasty an you can enjoy it as an evening snack. The bright color of this tikki is attractive, especially for kids and I am sure you will love the taste too.

Though the primary ingredient for this tikki is beetroot, it needs some binding agent to shape them into patties. So I have used potatoes and oats too. These tikkis are then pan-fried with little oil. This healthy snack that has a mix of sweet, spicy and tangy flavors. It tastes good on its own. But you could also serve it with a simple mint coriander chutney or peanut mint chutney or ketchup. These beet patties a great way to include veggies like beetroots in a snack and kids will love this beet tikki.

Beetroots are a nutritious vegetable as they are rich in vitamin C, iron and folate. They are also a good source of dietary fiber. Oats too are a good source of dietary fiber. Lets move on to the recipe for easy beetroot tikki.

How to make Beetroot Tikki step by step

  1. Firstly, wash the beetroots and potato. Take the whole beetroots and potato with the skin in a pressure cooker. Pressure cook them in enough water for 4 whistles. Alternatively, you can boil them in a pan with enough water till they turn soft.boiling aloo and beets for beetroot tikki
  2. Once the pressure has released by itself, remove the lid of the cooker and drain the water. Let the vegetables cool down and then peel off the skin of the potato and beets.peeling aloo and beets for beetroot tikki
  3. Mash the potatoes and grate the beetroots.potatoes and beet for tikki
  4. Mix well. Then add the coarsely-ground oats.adding oats for beetroot tikki
  5. Again mix well and add the spice powders along with salt. Add the grated ginger too and mix.adding spices for tikki
  6. Take a small portion of the beetroot mixture and shape into a small ball and slightly flatten it with the palms of your hands. Similarly, repeat this for the whole mixture.making patties for beetroot tikki
  7. Once you have prepared all the patties, refrigerate them for 20-30 minutes.beet tikkis to be fried
  8. Then heat a griddle or tava. Grease the tava and place 4-5 tikkis. Add 1 or 1 1/2 tsp oil for each tikki and fry them on a medium-low heat till they turn slightly brown. Then flip the tikkis and let them cook till they turn lightly brown. Flip over and slightly flatten the tikkis with the spatula and cook for a minute. Remove the tikkis from the tava. Likewise, fry the remaining tikkis in the same way.frying beetroot tikkis
  9. Oats and beetroot tikkis are ready to be served.

Beetroot Tikki recipe

Ingredients

( 1 cup = 250 ml )

  • 2 small beetroots ( chukandar )
  • 1 large potato ( aloo )
  • 1/2 tsp grated ginger ( adrak )
  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 1/4 tsp amchur powder ( dry mango powder )
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp chaat masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • Oil for frying tikkis

Instructions

  1. Wash the beetroots and potato. Take the whole beetroots and potato with the skin in a pressure cooker. Pressure cook them in enough water for 4 whistles. Alternatively, you can boil them in a pan with enough water till they turn soft.
  2. Meanwhile, blend the oats into a slightly coarse powder in a blender or mixer. Set this aside.
  3. Peel the ginger and grate it.
  4. Once the pressure from the cooker has released by itself, remove the lid of the cooker and drain the water. Let the vegetables cool down.
  5. Then peel off the skin of the potato and beets.
  6. Mash the potatoes. Grate the beetroots. Mix well.
  7. Then add the coarsely-ground oats.
  8. Again mix well and add the spice powders – red chilli powder, amchur powder, garam masala powder and chaat masala along with salt.
  9. Also add the grated ginger and mix.
  10. Take a small portion of the beetroot mixture and shape into a small ball and slightly flatten it with the palms of your hands.
  11. Repeat this for the whole mixture.
  12. Once you prepare all the patties, refrigerate them for 20-30 minutes.
  13. Then heat a griddle or tava. Grease the tava and place 4-5 tikkis. Add 1 or 1 1/2 tsp oil for each tikki and fry them on a medium-low heat till they turn slightly brown on the under side. Then flip the tikkis and let them cook till they turn lightly brown on the underside. Flip over and slightly flatten the tikkis with the spatula and cook for a minute. Remove the tikkis from the tava.
  14. Fry the remaining tikkis in the same way till all the beetroot mixture is used up.
  15. Beetroot tikkis are now ready to be served.

Notes

  • I used 1 large potato which was around 3/4 cup mashed.
  • The 2 small beetroots were around 3/4 cup grated.
  • Adjust red chilli powder as per taste. If not giving to kids, you can add minced green chillies too to the mixture.
