This is a simple and nutritious keerai masiyal recipe that I have prepared with arai keerai. You could use any other type of greens like mulai keerai or palak ( spinach ) for this recipe.
This is a traditional South Indian recipe that you could have with rice. It goes well with rotis also. There is no dal added to this masiyal and is very easy to make in minutes.
Green leafy vegetables are very nutritious and great to be included in our diet. This keerai masiyal is a healthy side dish recipe that tastes great.

Arai Keerai Masiyal – Mashed Greens Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 bunch arai keerai ( greens )
- 1 onion
- 3 garlic cloves
- 1 tomato
- 2 dry red chillies
- 1/2 tsp broken urad dal ( split black gram without skin )
- 1 green chilli
- A pinch of asafoetida
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- A few curry leaves
- 3 tsp oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Pick and wash the keerai thoroughly and roughly chop the keerai.
- Peel and chop the onion and garlic. Roughly chop the green chilli.
- In a pan, heat about 2 tsp oil. Add the chopped onions, chopped garlic and green chilli.
- Fry till the onions turn soft. Then add the chopped tomatoes and fry till the raw smell goes and it turns soft.
- Now add the chopped greens along with a little water and cook till the keerai turns soft.
- Cool it and grind the keerai mixture.
- In another pan, heat 1 tsp oil. Add mustard seeds, asafoetida and dry red chillies.
- When mustard seeds crackle, add urad dal and curry leaves. Fry for a few seconds.
- Then pour the keerai mixture to this along with a little water.
- Cook till the gravy thickens and then remove from heat.
- Serve keerai masiyal hot with rice.
Notes
- You can substitute arai keerai with mulai keerai or palak keerai.
