Easy Vazhakkai Fry Recipe | Raw Banana Fry

Easy vazhakkai fry recipe – quick and delicious South Indian spiced raw banana fry. This vazhakkai fry recipe has raw bananas or kacha kela, pan-fried with simple spices.

Raw bananas is one of those vegetables that taste as good as potatoes. I usually prepare this sabzi when I have to make a quick lunch.

I like the simplicity of this dish and that it has only a few ingredients but still tastes delicious. It is best served as a side dish for rice and goes great especially with sambar or rasam or even dal.

This recipe is very easy to make. Peel the green raw bananas, chop them and then fry with simple everyday spices to make this delicious pan fried raw banana sabzi.

Raw green bananas are a great source of Vitamin C and vitamin B6. They are also a good source of potassium and magnesium. Lets move on to the recipe for easy vazhakkai fry.

How to make Vazhakkai Fry Step by Step

  1. Firstly Trim the ends of the raw banana. Peel the thick skin of the raw banana with a knife or peeler. I like to retain a thin layer of the skin. Chop the peeled raw banana into small cubes. Keep immersed in water till use.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a non-stick pan. Add a pinch of asafoetida and mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds splutter, add the chopped raw banana and stir.adding chopped raw banana for vazhakkai fry
  3. Let it cook on medium heat for around 5 minutes. Then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt.adding spices for vazhakkai fry

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups chopped vazhakkai (raw banana / kacha kela)
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp garam masala powder
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Trim the ends of the raw banana. Peel the thick skin of the raw banana with a knife or peeler. I like to retain a thin layer of the skin. Chop the peeled raw banana into small cubes. Transfer the chopped raw banana in a bowl filled with water. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a non-stick kadai or pan. Add a pinch of asafoetida and mustard seeds. When mustard seeds splutter, add the chopped raw banana and stir.
  2. Let it cook on medium heat for around 5 minutes. Then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt.
  3. Add the remaining 1 tsp oil and mix well.
  4. Let this cook on a low flame till the raw bananas are soft inside and slightly crispy outside. Keep stirring occasionally to ensure that the raw bananas are evenly cooked. Finally sprinkle garam masala. Stir fry on high flame for a minute and remove from heat.
  5. Vazhakkai fry is now ready to be served.

Notes

  • Keep the chopped raw banana immersed in water, till use, to avoid discoloration.
